My research team’s municipal engineering projects include research in the areas of stormwater/snowmelt management, municipal wastewater treatment, and landfill energy recovery. Over the past 5 years, stormwater has become a major area of my team’s research with primary focus on the City of Saskatoon inputs into the South Saskatchewan River (SSR)(Project #1). My PhD research was in the municipal wastewater treatment area, thus, my NSERC Discovery Grant has been focused in this area. My team has a number of municipal wastewater projects including drinking water plant evaporative pond assessment (Project #2); municipal wastewater gases (Project #3); fate and transport chemical modeling (Projects #4 and #5); and landfill gas and geothermal (Project #6).
Project #1: Chemical and toxicological characterization of stormwater and snowmelt quality in the City of Saskatoon Collaborator: Markus Brinkmann (SENS/TOX) Partners: City of Saskatoon and Meewasin Funding: NSERC Discovery Grant (K.M.) and NSERC Engage Grant (Markus Brinkmann) Personnel: Hayley Popick (MSc) and Scott Read (Research Assistant)
Project #2: Assessment of evaporative ponds during and after the upgrade of Melville Water Treatment Plant Collaborator: Terry Fonstad (CGEE) Partner: SaskWater Funding: Mitacs and SaskWater Personnel: Ali Ekhlasinia (MSc) and Harrison Bull (MSc)
Project #3: Municipal wastewater gas emission estimation and modelling Partner: City of Saskatoon Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Funding: NSERC Discovery Grant (K.M.) and Dean’s Scholarship (M.A.) Personnel: Mohsen Asadi (PhD)
Project #4: Modeling the fate and transport of chemicals of emerging concern in municipal wastewater treatment processes Collaborator: Jafar Soltan (CBEE) Partner: City of Saskatoon Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Funding: NSERC Discovery Grant (K.M.) and Dean’s Scholarship (S.M.) Personnel: Shahab Minaei (PhD)
Project #5: Measurement and modelling of pharmaceutical concentrations in the Saskatoon Wastewater Treatment Plant Collaborators: Markus Brinkmann (SENS/TOX) and John Giesy (TOX) Partner: City of Saskatoon Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Funding: Research Junction Development Grant Personnel: John Challis (Banting PDF) and Shahab Minaei (PhD) Project #6: Assessment of the in situ energy recovery potential from medium-sized landfills in Canada Collaborators: Ian Fleming (CGEE) and Grant Ferguson (CGEE) Partner: Loraas Canada Ltd. Funding: NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant Personnel: Tyler Casavant (MSc) and others
